Description

Free space in an ext2 filesystem can be zero-filled so disk images compress better or reveal less leftover data. This is useful before archiving, cloning, or shrinking filesystem images.

The target filesystem must be chosen carefully and usually should not be mounted read-write. A wrong device or interrupted operation can damage data, so keep backups before using it.
