Provides compatibility functions for older software that still expects the legacy libxcrypt API. The underlying purpose is password hashing: allowing systems to verify passwords without storing the original password in readable form.
Most users keep it only because an older program, compatibility layer, or authentication component needs those legacy entry points. It is not an application to open.
