Name-service caching for glibc systems can be handled by a smaller drop-in nscd replacement. unscd is for administrators who want simpler passwd, group, hosts, or services cache behavior than the standard daemon.
Test authentication and name resolution before enabling it broadly. NSS cache changes can affect logins, user and group lookups, DNS behavior, service startup, and recovery access when configuration is wrong.
