Type 1 PostScript fonts can be made visible to older X font workflows by generating a fonts.scale file. This small Perl script helps administrators prepare legacy font directories.
Run it from a shell in the directory that contains the fonts you intend to index. It writes metadata files in that location, so use it only where you are comfortable changing font setup files.
