Time-series metrics can be stored in fixed-size database files for Graphite-style monitoring. Whisper keeps numeric samples over time with predictable disk usage and retention behavior.
It is used by monitoring systems and scripts rather than as a general database server. Retention settings determine which historical data is kept or overwritten, so choose them before relying on long-term metrics.
