Legacy applications can use a lightweight CORBA ORB for object communication. It is useful mainly for maintaining older GNOME-era or enterprise software that still depends on ORBit2.
CORBA middleware is legacy infrastructure. Avoid it for new projects unless compatibility requires it, and isolate old networked components carefully.
