Description
Legacy desktop software gains a hardware abstraction layer for discovering and describing devices. It preserves compatibility with old applications that expect HAL instead of newer Linux device APIs.
HAL is obsolete on modern systems and usually needed only by legacy software. Prefer current udev, UDisks, and desktop APIs for new hardware integration.
