kubectl can authenticate to Google Kubernetes Engine clusters through a Google Cloud CLI plugin. It is required by workflows that use gcloud credentials to access GKE clusters.
Cluster authentication is security-sensitive. Confirm the active Google account, project, and cluster context before running kubectl commands that can change production workloads.
